The Most Common Home Cooling Myths That Can Cost You Money

Mark J. Biel • July 22, 2021

Myths surrounding air conditioners continue to persist to this day. One possible explanation for this is that these home appliances are complex machines, They consist of many moving parts that work together to provide efficient comfort. While most of these misconceptions are relatively harmless, some can cost you money in the form of soaring energy bills.

The Most Common Home Cooling Myths That Can Cost You Money

Today, local cooling and  heating repair  contractor R.A. Biel Plumbing & Heating, Inc. debunks some of the most common home cooling myths that might be costing you money.

Myth 1: Fans Cool the Room

Electric fans, including ones installed on your ceiling, don’t work the same way AC systems do. They cool people, not your indoor living spaces. Fans blow air across your skin, causing your sweat to evaporate, which makes you feel cooler. When used together with your air conditioner, they’re an effective way to create airflow around your house and facilitate faster cooling. Make sure to adjust the thermostat up a few degrees if you use fans regularly. More importantly, turn them off when not in use.

Myth 2: A Bigger Air Conditioner Is Always Better

Air conditioning repair  experts will immediately tell you that this isn’t the case. When they install an HVAC system, they make sure that the unit is properly sized for the house. To do this, they perform heat load calculations before selecting the right system. Undersized ACs are in danger of failing prematurely due to stress. Oversized ones, meanwhile, cycle on and off too frequently, resulting in inconsistent cooling and increased energy bills. The systems in both situations tend to consume more energy as well.

Myth 3: Closing Vents to Unused Rooms Help Save Money

A central AC system utilizes a network of ducts and vents that distribute cool air around your house. They’re designed to provide adequate comfort in all of your indoor spaces, which is why closing a vent in an unused room is unnecessary. When you do this, you prevent cool air from circulating properly. As a result, the compressor will work harder, causing it to wear down.
