4 Mistakes Homeowners Make When Operating a Heat Pump

Mark J. Biel • April 15, 2020

Whenever homeowners hear the term “heat pump”, some tend to think it’s synonymous with a boiler or furnace. This isn’t the case, however, as according to  air conditioning repair  experts, they actually work differently. Unfortunately, due to this misconception, some homeowners make mistakes when operating their heat pumps,  such as:

Worrying About the Temperature Reading –  Heat pumps measure the ambient room temperatures of your home differently compared to other heating systems. As such, one of the mistakes you can make when operating a heat pump is worrying too much about the temperature reading. With that in mind, set your heat pump to a comfortable temperature and adjust the setting up and down over the course of a few days in order to finally reach the temperature that feels right to you.

Cranking Up Your Backup Heating System –  As much as possible, don’t crank up your backup heating system in tandem with your heat pump, as this can cost you a significant amount of energy and money.

Fiddling With It Every Day –  You may have had to lower the temperature of your old heating system when you slept or left for work, but heat pumps are different. According to  heating repair  experts, a heat pump reaches its peak efficiency when maintained at a set temperature, so make sure to find the right setting then leave it alone and let it work, unless you’re going to be gone for 24 hours or more.

Using Auto Mode –  Some homeowners think auto mode is a more efficient setting. However, if you use it, your unit can toggle unnecessarily between heating and cooling, making it inefficient as a result. According to experts, if you set your heat pump to heat in the winter and cool in the summer, it’ll run more efficiently.
