How to Take Care of a Tankless Water Heater

Mark J. Biel • March 9, 2021

Water heaters provide great convenience and comfort in our homes, especially during cold weather, as they deliver warm streams of water for us to use for various activities. One particular type of water heater that’s been increasing in popularity is the tankless water heater, which can deliver hot water directly into your outlet without a heat delay. This lets you use hot water immediately, unlike storage tank heaters that still experience delays. However, as efficient as they are, they still need to be maintained to perform well day-in and day-out.

In today’s blog, the top heating and  air conditioning repair  expert, R.A. Biel Plumbing & Heating, Inc., shares tips for taking care of a tankless water heater.

Flush it out.  The first and most fundamental step in taking care of your tankless water heater is to flush it out. This is an even more important step if you live in an area with hard water problems. Flushing the water heater will remove all lime scale buildup from the device. This process is also known as descaling, and should be done every six months to two years. This will help extend the lifespan of your tankless water heater.

You can do this on your own or call on a  heating repair  expert like R.A. Biel Plumbing & Heating, Inc. to do the job for you. We have the proper tools and equipment to flush your water heater and are familiar with the process. We’ll first remove the access panel, then shut off the water supply and release the pressure valve. We’ll run distilled vinegar into the sump pump to clean all sediment off the heater and valves, then rinse it clean.

Clean the water filter.  Another maintenance activity that shouldn’t be overlooked is cleaning the water filter. Some tankless heaters come with a filter screen that traps large debris to prevent it from reaching the heating unit. These screens last as long as the heating unit, but you should still clean them regularly to get rid of any debris or sediment. You can soak the filter in white vinegar and rinse it off with running water. Check the manufacturer’s manual on how to remove all of the debris, or call on a professional heater cleaner to help you.
