AC Drain Line Clogs: How to Prevent & Remove Them

Mark J. Biel • March 18, 2022

Air conditioning units are essential to your home, especially during the summer. When operating, an AC unit’s refrigerant coils take in moisture and condense. This condensation needs to be drained to prevent water damage and leaks in your home. Otherwise, your drain line could get clogged up. How can you prevent and remove AC drain line clogs?

AC Drain Line Clogs: How to Prevent & Remove Them

In this post, air conditioning and  new heating system installation  specialist R.A. Biel Plumbing and Heating shares tips on preventing and removing clogs in the AC drain line.

Prevention Is Key

Reducing the chances of drain line clogs helps prevent costly repairs. There are many ways to prevent these clogs, such as:

  • Installing a condensate trap   When you install a condensate trap, clogs will form in the trap, making it easier to remove them with a brush. If you’re unsure what a condensate trap looks like and how to install it, contact a trusted HVAC and  plumbing repair  company.
  • Getting good air filters   Dust buildup on the evaporator coils is one of the leading causes of clogs. Having good-quality air filters installed in your unit and regularly replacing them lowers the chances of drain line clogging.
  • Regular flushing   Routinely flush the drain line with water and schedule maintenance to keep it in good condition. Use warm water, as it’s better than strong chemicals at flushing the line since substances like bleach can damage it. Drain lines are typically made with ABS plastic or PVC.

Removing Clogs

A wet/dry vacuum will typically take care of drain line clogs. Secure the vacuum hose to the end of the drain line and suck away! Make sure the connection is tightly sealed to properly get all the clogs out. Some drain lines are more difficult to clean out and access, however. and at times using a wet/dry vacuum won’t work. In these cases, it’s best to hire the pros for a more thorough job.
