An HVAC Troubleshooting Checklist

Mark J. Biel • December 16, 2019

In many cases, there’s no need to panic when it comes to home maintenance needs—HVAC problems included. If you’re having an issue with your HVAC system, you might find that the problem isn’t as serious as you think. The solution may even be found on the basic troubleshooting checklist presented below. Check these tips out first before you call for HVAC repairs. No Cooling

If your circuit breaker has tripped, reset it. Check your thermostat control settings. Turn the thermostat off and on, then reset it to the desired temperature and see if that helps. If the indoor unit is running but the outdoor unit isn’t, turn off your thermostat controls for one to three hours. Reset the system, and if there’s no change and the air coming through the vents is warm, then it’s time to call for repairs.

No Heating

If you have a gas furnace, check the furnace shut-off valve. Make sure it wasn’t switched off. Check if the circuit breaker might have tripped or the thermostat controls were set wrong. Perform the corrective actions described earlier for both cases. If nothing helps, call for HVAC maintenance immediately.

Higher Utility Bills

Check to see if your thermostat is set at a warmer or cooler temperature than that outside. If it is, your system has been working too hard, which is what has caused a higher-than-usual utility bill. Adjust your thermostat to a more moderate temperature to fix this issue.

No Airflow

The filters for your system may need replacement if you’re not getting airflow. Consult your owner’s manual to find out how to replace the filters and the type you need. If you still have weak to no airflow, a dirty coil may be hampering your system. In this case, call your trusted contractor for a coil and air duct cleaning.
