Debunking Common Home Heating Myths

Mark J. Biel • October 14, 2021

Common myths are usually harmless, but not when it comes to your home heating system. It’s important to stick to facts when using your home’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning system. Proper use and maintenance are advised to save money and energy. In this article,  heating repair  expert R.A. Biel Plumbing and Heating debunks some popular home heating myths to help you stay warm inside your house without damaging your heater.

Debunking Common Home Heating Myths

Myth #1: The Higher the Heater’s Temperature, the Faster Your House Will Warm Up

In reality, your heater won’t release more heat even if your raise the temperature. Cranking the temperature up may seem like the easiest way to speed up the heating process, but it doesn’t work that way. Setting your heater higher will just cause your home to be heated longer. There’s also the risk of overheating your house when your heater’s set to a higher temperature. This is a waste of energy that will just increase your energy bills.

Myth #2: Sealing Leaks With Duct Tape Is Highly Effective

Duct tape may work for a quick fix, but it won’t repair leaks. If you want to seal a gap permanently, try a mastic sealant or metal tape. However, to make sure your leaks are properly repaired, it’s best to talk to a heating and  air conditioning repair  professional.

Myth # 3: It’s Cheaper to Run Space Heaters in a Few Rooms Than to Run a Gas Heater Throughout Your House

As a homeowner, saving money on electricity by using a space heater in a few rooms instead of the main heater may seem like a good hack. However, you’ll end up spending three to five times more on electricity than you would on gas to heat your home. Even if only a few rooms are heated, you’ll end up paying the same amount as if you were heating the entire house with an electric heater.
