Never Avoid These Gas Furnace Issues

Mark J. Biel • November 2, 2022

With routine maintenance, your gas furnace is expected to run efficiently and keep your home warm and cozy during the cold months. It is also crucial to the system’s longevity, allowing it to last up to 15 or 20 years. Of course, there will be some instances when your unit may experience issues that prevent it from performing its best. They may seem harmless, but they lead to potential hazards if left unaddressed. Our  new heating system installation  experts at R.A. Biel Plumbing and Heating have listed some of them below.

Never Avoid These Gas Furnace Issues

Incorrect Air-to-Gas Ratio

Your gas furnace should have the correct mixture of natural gas and oxygen for efficient operation. This is to ensure it burns efficiently while producing only as little pollution as possible. But if you find sooty residue in the unit, it could mean it’s getting too little oxygen or too much gas. Also known as incomplete combustion, it’s not a simple problem that can be put off, as this causes the system to eat up more gas and waste energy. It also produces more carbon monoxide, which can be dangerous to one’s health once it breaches your home’s indoor air.

Ignition Delays

Your furnace has a delayed ignition issue if you often hear a bang or a boom whenever you turn it on. This issue is the result of the burners getting gas but being inhibited from lighting up. When this happens, the inside of the furnace has gas buildup, which then dissipates upon ignition but comes with a small explosion. This may seem like a minor issue, but frequent occurrences put the unit’s inner components under stress, leading to costly breakdowns. As trusted  new air conditioning  system installers, we recommend getting your furnace checked by a professional technician before it gets worse.

Heat Exchanger Issues

The metal coils in the heat exchanger constantly expand and contract whenever it warms and cools the air passing through. Over time, the process makes it brittle until cracks start to appear. Improper venting and old age can also cause corrosion on the component and affect overall performance. Remedy this as soon as possible so carbon monoxide gas doesn’t enter your home.
