All households need water heaters if their occupants are to survive the cold months of winter. Though your water heater may be providing you with hot showers now, it won’t last forever. In this post, R.A. Biel Plumbing & Heating, Inc., your plumbing repair company of choice, discusses the various signs that let you know when it’s time to replace your water heater, as well as the different parts of the unit.
Your Heater Is 10-20 Years Old
If you have an older unit, the heating element, thermostat or gas valve may need replacement. Most manufacturers would say that the suggested service life of a water heater is about 8 to 12 years. If yours is more than 10 years old and leaks, works roughly or doesn’t work at all, it’s most likely time for a replacement.
The Thermostat
The temperature on the thermostat shouldn’t be set too low, not should it ever be set above 120 degrees Fahrenheit. If it’s set where it’s supposed to be and you still get little to no hot water, it may be time to replace your water heater. In this case, be sure to promptly contact your contractor to determine if it’s time for a new heating system installation.
Dip Tube
Readying yourself for a warm bath only to discover that there’s no hot water can be bothersome to say the least. This may happen if you have a broken dip tube, which could cause you to run out of hot water. A damaged dip tube can’t push the cold water to the bottom of the tank for heating, so the water enters the pipes still cold.
Loud Noises
Loud noises can happen when sediment in the tank starts boiling with the water. This signals the need to flush or replace the water heater before it cracks or leaks. If your hot water supply often gets depleted, install a larger water heater or add an extra unit. You could also upgrade to a tankless water heater. For these issues or the like, it’s best to consult a professional plumber or a new air conditioning expert.
