Things to Expect Before and During HVAC installation

Mark J. Biel • December 10, 2018

If you are considering a heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) replacement, then you should be familiar with what to expect with your new heating system installation.

Here are some important things to look out for:

Finding the Right HVAC Contractor

You should get up to four HVAC repair cost estimates from trusted HVAC contractors. Prepare a list of licensed, insured and trusted HVAC contractors in your area and schedule a visit from them so that you can consult each one about your project proposal.

Allow them to take measurements and conduct inspections, and then find out how each one will tackle the service. It is important to check if their license is updated to know if they have other services like new air conditioning installation.

Before the Replacement

Once you have chosen a contractor, he will conduct an official measurement of the square footage of your installation site, execute load calculations and recommend the size and type of HVAC system.

Even if only one part of your HVAC system needs replacing, consider replacing the entire system anyway to achieve maximum system efficiency. The HVAC system size varies depending on your property, so ask your contractor about this consideration.

Prepare for the Installation

Move valuables or furniture to a safe place before the installation crew arrives, as this can speed up the process of installation. You should also cover your heavy furniture and other objects that can’t be moved with a dust cover because dust may build up during installation.

Replacing the Old HVAC System

The installation crew will replace the old equipment first with your new air conditioner and heating unit. They will cut the power of the old HVAC unit, remove any refrigerant and disassemble and remove the old equipment.

They should also check all areas of your home that might affect the HVAC installation, such as any pipes that might need plumbing repair during the installation process, and before operating the new system that was installed.
