Tips on Improving Your Air Conditioner’s Efficiency

Mark J. Biel • May 27, 2019

Air conditioner inefficiency is tantamount to discomfort, energy waste and premature HVAC equipment failure. To enhance the performance of your AC unit every cooling season, R.A. Biel Plumbing and Heating recommends the following tips:

Clean the Condenser

The condenser is the outdoor component of your air conditioning system. Given its location, its parts are prone to dust buildup and debris accumulation. When dirty, this equipment needs more time and more energy to get its job done.

In addition to air duct cleaning , regular condenser maintenance is also important. Washing the unit with a garden hose can help rid it of dirt. As a preventive measure, consider barricading it to keep it safe from pets and free of tree debris; just make sure there’s enough clearance between your condenser and the fencing material to allow for ventilation.

Ensure That Indoor Vents Are Unobstructed

Blocked indoor supply vents can suffocate your air conditioner. Vacuum it regularly to remove any dust, and move furniture away from it to make sure there’s steady airflow.

Reduce Solar Heat Gain

HVAC repair experts like R.A. Biel Plumbing and Heating can attest that keeping your space from becoming too hot makes it easier to cool. An effective way to pull this off is by preventing most of the sun’s heat-causing infrared light from getting inside your house.

There are two ways to achieve this. First, invest in windows with multiple panes and low-emissivity coatings. Second, dress up your windows with the right treatments or covers.

Install Ceiling Fans

While moderating your thermostat settings does mean your AC won’t have to work as hard, doing so may compromise your comfort. To avoid this dilemma, most  HVAC maintenance specialists recommend installing ceiling fans in the rooms you use the most. These appliances will help improve airflow and produce a breeze that makes the inside air feel colder than it really is.

Let R.A. Biel Plumbing and Heating inspect your air conditioning system. We’ll clean its sensitive internal components and fix minor issues to ensure reliable performance. Call (505) 672-7888 or (970) 884-3358 to arrange an appointment with one of our qualified HVAC technicians.
