Upgrading your heating and cooling system is not as simple as buying a new car or new computer. There are certain things you need to consider before making your choice. In this blog, HVAC repair and installation contractor R.A. Biel Plumbing & Heating shares the questions you should ask yourself before you upgrade your HVAC system.
Does Your Home Feel Uncomfortable in the Winter and/or Summer?
HVAC systems are intended to keep indoor spaces comfortable. This means that if most areas of your home are uncomfortably warm in summer or not warm enough in winter, you may need to upgrade your system. Before making your decision, however, it’s important to consider the following questions:
Does Your Home Have Insulation Issues?
Installing a new HVAC system in a house with insulation problems is like trying to fill a leaky water container with water. You first need to make sure that the attic, exterior walls and all types of fenestrations (windows, entry doors and skylights) are properly insulated. This means there should be no heat leaks or, in the case of fenestrations, conductive surfaces such as single-pane glass.
Do You Keep Your Heating and/or Air Conditioner at Maximum Output?
Assuming that your home is properly insulated and you haven’t missed your HVAC maintenance appointments, you shouldn’t need to set your HVAC system to maximum output all the time. If you find yourself having to do this, your HVAC system may be be too small for the size of your home.
Proper sizing is important. An HVAC system that’s too small will always be redlining just to meet the minimum cooling and heating requirements for your home, while buying one that’s too large will result in short-cycling, where the HVAC system reaches the required temperature too fast. This leads to a stop-start operation that may cause damage to the HVAC system over time. A certified HVAC technician can inspect your heating and cooling systems and determine if you really need to upgrade your HVAC system.
