Useful HVAC Spring Cleaning Tips for Pet Owners

Mark J. Biel • April 7, 2022

To a pet owner, cats, dogs are more than just animals. They’re a part of the family, which means they deserve to be loved and cared for just as much as any other family member. Brushing them regularly (preferably outside) will help keep pet fur out of your home and reduce its effect on your indoor air quality. To ensure the air in your home stays clean and free of pet dander, your HVAC system will require regular care and maintenance. To help you out, here our  new heating system installation  experts at R.A. Biel Plumbing and Heating share a few useful tips:

Useful HVAC Spring Cleaning Tips for Pet Owners

Clean your air ducts.  When pet dander and other particles get into the ducts and HVAC system, they get trapped and recirculate throughout different areas of your home whenever your unit is used. This will affect your indoor air quality, triggering allergic reactions and causing respiratory problems in the rest of your family. Duct cleaning is required every three to five years, so if you haven’t had your ducts cleaned in recent years, consider getting it done this spring.

Clean and vacuum your home.  Keeping your house clean is important if you want to maintain good indoor air quality. This will also help improve your HVAC system’s performance by removing excess pet hair from your furniture, carpet and other places that trap dust, pet dander and other debris before it gets into your vents. As trusted installers for  new air conditioning  systems, we recommend vacuuming these areas in your home at least once a week to keep them clean.

Clean or replace your air filter.  Normally, HVAC filters are cleaned every three months depending on how often they’re used. But with a household pet, you’ll need to change them more frequently, around every 30 to 60 days. If you’re unsure exactly when to change them, check your filter once a month. Doing this will also help keep your HVAC system running efficiently as it maintains good air quality and comfortable indoor temperatures.
