7 Ways to Reduce VOC Levels in Your Home

Mark J. Biel • January 4, 2023

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are a group of carbon-based chemicals found in many common household items, including paints and cleaners. VOCs can harm your health with prolonged exposure. R.A. Biel Plumbing and Heating, a renowned  new air conditioning installation  contractor in your area, lists seven effective ways to reduce VOC levels in your home.

7 Ways to Reduce VOC Levels in Your Home

1. Improve Ventilation

Ventilation reduces VOC levels by letting them escape outdoors. Open windows regularly to take in fresh air from the outside. You can also run exhaust fans in your kitchens and bathrooms to let VOCs escape.

2. Install a Whole-House Fan or Air Exchanger

Consider installing a whole-house fan or air exchanger to improve your home’s ventilation. These systems will continuously draw fresh air into your house while expelling stale and polluted air.

3. Utilize Ceiling Fans and Window Fans

Ceiling and window fans circulate air and can force VOCs outside. Keep them running with the windows and doors opened to expel VOCs efficiently. That said, consult a ventilation and  plumbing repair  contractor to position ceiling and window fans for maximum ventilation and expulsion of VOCs.

4. Use Low-VOC Materials and Products

Whenever possible, opt for low-VOC materials and products. Many paints, sealants and cleaning products now come in VOC-free varieties that are just as effective as their original counterparts.

5. Control Temperature and Humidity

Keeping temperature and humidity levels in check can also help reduce VOCs. Stagnant air can lead to an accumulation of pollutants, so aim to keep your home at a comfortable temperature and maintain proper humidity levels.

6. Use Natural Cleaning Products

Use natural cleaning products as much as possible. All-natural cleaning products are better for the environment and contain no VOCs.

7. Regular Maintenance and Cleaning

Lastly, regular home maintenance and cleaning can go a long way in reducing VOC levels. Schedule carpet and furniture vacuuming to reduce pollutants in the air. Consider regularly changing air filters on HVAC systems for efficient VOC filtration.
