3 Causes of Common Boiler Problems

Mark J. Biel • January 13, 2022

No homeowner wants their boiler to break down right at the peak of winter. That’s why you should be proactive about tune-ups. By identifying the cause of a boiler problem, you’ll be able to mitigate the issue and ensure continuous, reliable performance. Here a trusted  drain and sewer repair  expert in the area, R.A. Biel Plumbing & Heating, discusses some of the things that can cause problems with your boiler.

Faulty thermostat.  A malfunctioning thermostat may seem like a trivial issue, but it can actually lead to problems with your boiler. This is because a broken thermostat will prevent your boiler from turning on and shutting off properly. Not only that–this can also cause inconsistencies with your home’s indoor temperature. If you notice a problem with your boiler, first take a hard look at the thermostat.

Limescale buildup.  There are cases where limescale and mineral deposits will accumulate inside the heat exchanger and other crucial parts of your boiler. This not only restricts the flow of air, but also leads to ‘kettling’, a process where the water inside the unit boils and turns into steam. Kettling puts significant pressure on the heat exchanger, and you’ll know it’s occurring by the loud rumbling sound you’ll hear coming from the boiler. Before this leads to boiler failure, call R.A. Biel Plumbing & Heating pronto. We’re not just your cooling and  heating repair  expert–you can also count on us for quick, effective solutions to your boiler issues.

Old age.  If your boiler is already nearing the end of its service life, it will be more susceptible to problems. A boiler that’s installed and maintained properly can last between 10 and 15 years. If your existing unit is now at or has passed this point, you should consider getting a newer, better one. R.A. Biel Plumbing & Heating can help you explore your options and decide on the replacement boiler that will best meet your needs.
