4 Common Problems Related to Hard Water

Mark J. Biel • May 6, 2021

While tap water is generally safe to use and drink, it’s not actually composed completely of H20. In most cases, ground water percolates through mineral deposits and picks up trace amounts of iron, magnesium and calcium. This causes normal water to become ‘hard’ due to the high mineral content. When hard water is overlooked, it can cause a number of issues, not only in your home, but with your health as well. Here R.A. Biel Plumbing & Heating, Inc., the trusted  new heating system installation  and plumbing repair company, shares some of the problems associated with having hard water.

Bacterial growth.  Calcium, magnesium and iron deposits in hard water aren’t particularly harmful when consumed. The bad news, however, is that hard water may contain sediment that carries potentially harmful bacteria. You can usually tell if bacteria is present by the taste and smell of the water coming from your faucets. Water that tastes ‘earthy’ may have actual dirt or algae in it. If it has a moldy aftertaste, that’s probably algal blooms. If the water smells like rotten eggs, this may be caused by certain bacteria reacting with magnesium and creating sulfates.

Clogged pipes.  Hard water is known to clog showerheads, which will hamper your bathing experience and can also become a major issue for your home’s pipes. Scale deposits can build up inside the plumbing system and constrict the flow of water, resulting in backups. When this happens, be sure to call a trusted  plumbing repair  company like R.A. Biel Plumbing & Heating, Inc. promptly for the necessary solution.

Skin irritation.  Washing with hard water can leave your skin dry and irritated. This is because it contains certain minerals that can suck the moisture from your body. In fact, some studies show that regular exposure to hard water can cause eczema symptoms to worsen.

Recurring stains.  If you spot brown or reddish stains in your toilets and sinks or around the faucets, these are most likely from the rust contained in hard water. They won’t entirely go away (even with regular scrubbing) until you solve your hard water problem.

In addition to new air conditioning  installation, R.A. Biel Plumbing & Heating, Inc. also specializes in plumbing work. In fact, we carry a high-quality selection of water softeners that can effectively deal with hard water in your home.
