Myths Debunked: 3 Common Misconceptions About Plumbing

Mark J. Biel • September 24, 2020

Do you frequently encounter plumbing problems in your home? Plumbing myths—and by extension, bad habits—might be to blame.

In this post, the plumbing and  heating repair  experts at R.A. Biel Plumbing & Heating debunk more plumbing myths.

It’s Okay to Pour Hot Grease Down the Drains Because It’s In Liquid Form

Everyone knows you should never pour grease or oil down the sink. Grease can quickly combine with other chemicals and form fatbergs, which can clog sewer lines and cause water to back up. However, what about hot grease? It’s in liquid form, so it shouldn’t clog your drains, right? You’d be surprised at how quickly hot oil cools and solidifies. Instead of pouring grease down the drains, set it aside and let it cool down. Afterward, put in a container and throw it away.

You Can Clean and Deodorize Your Garbage Disposal Using Lemon Peels

Home maintenance hacks on the internet should always be taken with a grain of salt. One popular home maintenance hack is using lemon peels to clean the garbage disposal. Sure, lemon peels can give your garbage disposal that fresh citrusy scent. However, citric acid alone won’t be able to remove all of the gunk that’s accumulated in your garbage disposal. Not to mention the acid can cause corrosion.

You Can Use a Plunger to Unclog Kitchen Drains

This is a novel home maintenance hack you should avoid. A plunger could pull out some of the drain cleaner and cause it to splash all over your countertop, staining it. It could also splash onto your skin and potentially cause chemical burns. Remember: When in doubt, it’s best to contact  drain and sewer repair  plumbers. Home maintenance hacks make everything seem so easy, but some of them are more likely to cost you in the long run.
