What Color Should Your Furnace Flame Be?

Mark J. Biel • December 8, 2021

A furnace is an essential investment in any home, and making sure it’s running at peak efficiency helps ensure a safe, comfortable living experience year-round. It’s important to recognize when it’s time to repair or replace your natural gas or oil furnace before utility costs rack up. In this post, a  plumbing repair  and furnace maintenance company talks about what color your furnace flame should be and what you should do if it’s a different one.

Is the Furnace Flame Yellow or Blue?

When your gas-fueled furnace is running efficiently, it produces a blue-colored flame with yellow hues appearing at the tip. However, if the equipment discharges a flickering  or yellow-colored flame instead of the normal shade of blue, it’s likely that poisonous carbon monoxide is being emitted. While carbon monoxide is colorless, odorless and tasteless, it’s extremely toxic and dangerous. Also, when the pilot light is a yellow color, this normally indicates inefficient combustion, a sign that other condensates, such as rust and tar, are burning along with methane.

What Are the Proper Solutions?

A yellow, orange, red, green or purple flame is a sign that your furnace needs attention from a professional  new air conditioning  and heating specialist. Once your furnace is replaced, let a certified technician periodically inspect your heating pipes, air ducts and ventilation to confirm these components are working properly and not posing a health risk to you and your family. It’s also a good idea to install carbon monoxide alarms in your home so you can detect a carbon monoxide leak before it’s too late.
