4 Things You Should Know About Maintaining Your Heating System

Mark J. Biel • December 22, 2021

HVAC maintenance is vital if you want to keep your heating system in top shape. Not only does a well-maintained system aid in keeping your home warm over the cold winter months, it also helps avert heating system malfunctions that could cause your energy bills to spike. In addition, regular maintenance prevents inefficient heating that can be detrimental to the health of your household members. Thankfully, there are things you can do to keep up with your heating system’s maintenance which will enable you to keep it in near perfect condition.

4 Things You Should Know About Maintaining Your Heating System

In this post, R.A. Biel Plumbing & Heating explains four things you need to do to maintain an efficient heating system.

Change the filter – One thing you should do when maintaining your heating system is to check the filter monthly. The filter should be cleaned or replaced regularly, especially if your home has a lot of dust. It’s important to replace filters often to prevent dirt and debris from being blown into the unit itself.

Remove dust and debris – It’s not just the filter off of which you need to clean dust and debris, however; the air vents and other components of the system should be thoroughly cleaned as well. You can use a vacuum cleaner, rag or cleaning agent to free your home from dirt. As for the vents, you may have to remove them from the unit and soak them in a cleaning solution to dissolve the accumulated grime.

Clean the drainage hole – Your heating unit contains a drainage hole at the bottom to prevent moisture buildup. If too much moisture enters your system, it could damage to your unit’s components. Therefore, remember to check the drainage hole for clogs every now and then. In the event that it’s clogged, call in a heating and air duct cleaning maintenance professional to fix the issue as soon as possible.

Check the thermostat –  The thermostat on your heater is a crucial part of the system, so be sure to include this in your maintenance routine. Test it to see if your heating system turns on when you turn up the thermostat. If you notice your thermostat isn’t working as well as it should, there might be a problem with its wiring or electrical components, which means you should call a repairman to fix it immediately.
