4 Things You Can Do If You Lose Heat During the Winter

Mark J. Biel • December 27, 2020

If you live in an area that experiences cold temperatures during the winter season, it’s important that your heating works on a daily basis. Otherwise, your home will become too cold for comfort, which could result in health problems for you and your family. Unfortunately,  air conditioning repair  pros say that unexpected occurrences such as heat loss can occur during the winter season, and as such it’s best to know what you can do if this happens to you.

Here are four things you can do to keep yourself warm if your home loses heat during the winter season.

Wear warm clothes –  If you somehow lose heating in your home during the winter season, one way you can keep yourself warm is by bundling up in warmer clothing. By wearing jackets, socks, pants and several layers of shirts, you can help keep yourself as warm as possible until the heating comes back on or a professional is able to help you fix the problem.

Stay in one room –  If you’re facing an extended power outage and heat loss, you can conserve heat by staying in one room. Pick a room away from the prevailing winds and hang blankets over the door to help keep the room warm. Put blankets, rugs, cardboard and pillows on the floor as well to further insulate the room and prevent heat loss. If you want to trap heat, on the other hand, try setting up a tent in the house to keep warm and share heat.

Eliminate heat loss –  In addition to the aforementioned methods,  heating repair  professionals say that you should also eliminate any potential sources of heat loss as much as you can to keep warm while the heating is still out. To do this, you should avoid opening and closing exterior doors and close all doors inside your home before blocking any sources of drafts with a rolled up towel. Alternatively, if your windows have curtains and blinds, you can close them as well to further insulate the window.

Safely add heat to your home –  Finally, you can also add a few safe sources of heat around your home when the heating goes out. According to experts, there are plenty of ways to accomplish this, such as using indoor propane heaters, running a bathtub full of hot water or even baking a few cookies so your oven can release some heat into your home.
