3 Ways to Set Your Thermostat for Comfort and Energy Efficiency

Mark J. Biel • February 21, 2019

Did you know that you can save at least 10% on heating and cooling costs every year just by setting your thermostat correctly? Unfortunately, almost 90% of Americans are not taking advantage of this simple trick because they’re not aware of it. Luckily it’s easy to do, especially when you use the right programmable thermostat for your home, says HVAC maintenance expert R.A. Biel Plumbing & Heating, Inc. Just keep in mind these basics to get started:

There are ideal temperature settings for every season. If you want to achieve maximum energy savings, there are certain temperatures to which you should be setting your thermostat. In the winter, for instance, the ideal indoor temperature is 68 degrees Fahrenheit when homeowners are at home, and 62 to 66 degrees when away from home or sleeping at night. These temperatures may not be what you’re used to, so it’s best to ease into things by adjusting the thermostat gradually. To help you and your family get acclimated, set your thermostat one degree lower each week until the recommended temperatures are achieved.

Turn down (or up) the heat or air conditioning about 30 minutes before leaving the house. There should be enough residual heat or cool air remaining to help keep you comfortable until you step out. Feel like your heating and cooling system is performing as it should? If this is the case, your home might be due for some air duct cleaning.

Set your thermostat to a lower temperature during the day.  In this way, your heating system won’t have to work as hard to warm up your house when needed later on, letting you avoid unnecessary energy use while still staying comfortable at night.
