Ways to Keep Your AC Energy-Efficient Year-Round

Mark J. Biel • January 30, 2019

An energy-efficient HVAC system upgrade can help drive down your cooling costs during the hotter months, but it’s not a solution. Buying the latest air conditioner doesn’t guarantee that you can save more money nor increase your comfort. Without a strategy, your purchase may not ease your concerns about HVAC inefficiency and discomfort.

In addition to tackling air duct cleaning ahead of summer, R.A. Biel Plumbing and Heating recommends these effective measures:

Keep Conditioned-Air Leakage

If you live in a relatively old house, there’s a good chance that it’s not airtight. This can be a problem because a leaky room allows your conditioned air to go to waste. To avoid this, seal the gaps around your windows, doors and walls.

Keep Your Thermostat Away From the Sun

The role of a thermostat is to monitor the air temperature within the room and notify the cooling unit when the space gets too hot. When a thermostat is exposed to direct sunlight, however, it may think that the air temperature is several degrees higher than it really is. Your air conditioner will consequently run and cool the room excessively.

If this is the case, call an HVAC repair expert, like R.A. Biel Plumbing and Heating, to relocate your thermostat to the right wall.

Install a Fan

Running AC and a fan at the same time can make a space feel 10 degrees cooler. A ceiling fan is a small investment to help the amount of work your HVAC system needs to run more efficiently.

Cover Your Windows

Any HVAC maintenance specialist will tell you that closing your drapes or blinds helps eliminate one of the biggest sources of heat: the sun. Do this to empty rooms to keep them from turning into a furnace during the hottest parts of the day.
