How Air Purifiers With Germicidal Light Improve Indoor Air Quality

Mark J. Biel • May 7, 2020

Ultraviolet light has been used for disinfecting water, air and surfaces. It’s also used with air purifiers to kill airborne pathogens and microorganisms such as mold, bacteria and viruses. Now that there’s a pandemic, maintaining good indoor air quality (IAQ) is very important.

Learn how air purifiers with germicidal UV lights can contribute to healthier IAQ from a local  HVAC repair  expert.

UV Light Air Purifiers

UV air purifiers utilize UV-C light to reduce indoor air pollutants. You can purchase them as stand-alone, free-standing devices or as units integrated with your existing HVAC system. The air that your heating and cooling system produces passes through UV lamps in an effort to directly disinfect the air through germicidal irradiation.

Most UV air purifiers need additional systems for optimal performance. They’re typically installed in larger High-Efficiency Particulate Arrestance (HEPA) air filtration systems. According to the EPA, these air purifiers aren’t as effective as a stand-alone unit, as they can’t trap or get rid of particles. At R.A. Biel Plumbing & Heating, you can count on us for air purifier installation and  HVAC maintenance. Our experienced technicians will make sure to deliver the best heating and cooling solutions for your home.

The Importance of Good IAQ

Even if you’re inside the house, you can still be exposed to indoor pollutants. Air pollution can also occur indoors and is linked to fatigue, headaches and dizziness. Keeping your IAQ healthy is especially important now that there’s a coronavirus pandemic. Good lung health is vital for combatting the virus. Poor IAQ can also negatively affect your productivity, alertness and critical thinking abilities.
