As cold weather draws near, your heating appliances must be in great shape in order to keep you warm and comfortable throughout the winter. Your boiler is one of the most important parts of your heating system. Be sure that it’s operating effectively to avoid problems such as clogged drains or burst pipes.
Here air conditioning repair professional R.A. Biel Plumbing and Heating suggests the following tips to keep your boiler healthy and functioning as it should during the winter.
Check for signs of leaks. If you notice any rusting pipes or puddles of water in your boiler shell, you’re most likely experiencing leaks. Leaking is a common indicator that your boiler needs a repair or replacement. During the winter, you’ll want to check the area around your boiler for any signs of leaks. Leaks usually start small, so make sure to call a plumber immediately to prevent it from getting worse.
Bleed your radiators. Air bubbles usually get trapped inside your heating system. These pockets of air, which become stuck within the system, rise and collect at the top of your radiators, which will prevent them from reaching their full heating potential. As such, experts recommend bleeding your radiators at least once a year, preferably before winter arrives. This is very easy to do, and can also help you save energy.
Turn on your boiler. If your boiler has been inactive for a long time, it could seize up. You don’t want to find out that it’s having trouble when you’re already freezing from the cold. Thus, make sure that your boiler is in tip-top shape as early as fall or even summer. By turning your heating on for 15 to 20 minutes each week, you may prevent your system from jamming. If problems arise, it’s best to schedule heating repair services before winter when you need your boiler the most.
Insulate your pipes. During the winter, your pipes may freeze and become blocked. Eventually, this will cause your boiler to stop working. To prevent this from happening, you might want to consider adding insulation or waterproof cladding around the pipes for additional protection. You may also want to use easy-to-fit foam tubes to reduce heat loss and keep the water hot longer. However, keep in mind not to make any changes to the pipe itself, as only a qualified engineer should operate on it.
Book a boiler service. The best way to ensure that your boiler is healthy and performing as it should is to book an annual boiler service. Even if you think your boiler is working well, it’s still worth having it checked out to ensure everything is in perfect condition. Your engineer should be able to spot and address any small issues before they can lead to bigger problems.
