Variable-Speed Compressor Technology and Its Benefits

Mark J. Biel • April 29, 2019

According to the U.S. Census, more than 75% of the 132 million homes in America replace their ducted HVAC system yearly. An efficient HVAC system helps ensure that your home feels comfortable and has good indoor air quality.

In this post, your local HVAC maintenance provider, R.A. Biel Plumbing & Heating, talks about variable-speed technology.

How It Works

Variable-speed technology employs a fan motor located inside the air handler, which is usually a furnace or blower coil. The air handler is the inner part of an air conditioner that transports cooled or heated air to the ductwork. It works by connecting a motor control drive to the compressor and then joining the line input power from the utility to the drive. The motor operates at various speeds in order to control the distribution of heated and cooled air within the house. These variable-speed motors are fairly energy efficient, as they consume less electricity than conventional motors.

Benefits

In addition to savings on energy costs, variable-speed technology protects itself from damage as stated by your HVAC repair technician. If the motor control drive receives unusual power activity from the utility line, the system will adjust the power that reaches the compressor, thus preventing failure. Immediately contact professionals if your HVAC system stops working properly. If you’re sensitive to temperature changes, you should consider getting a variable-speed system, as it provides precise temperature control.

Very high or very low indoor humidity is another reason a home can feel less than comfortable. As the compressor runs in air conditioning mode, it will also pull humidity away from your home. Though variable-speed systems run slower, they operate longer than traditional motors, reducing humidity levels and making living areas more comfortable.

A variable-speed system is more capable of handling extremely hot or cold weather conditions. For example, the air conditioner can overspeed the compressor faster than standard systems. This design helps keep your home dry and comfortable in all seasons.
