7 Tips for Minimizing Spring Allergen Exposure

Mark J. Biel • April 22, 2019

Seasonal allergies affect many people in the United States. This is especially true in the spring due to the high pollen count, though pollen isn’t the only thing that can trigger allergies. Mild winter temperatures promote early pollination, while rainy spring weather heightens plant and mold growth. If you’re experiencing symptoms of seasonal allergies that aren’t getting better, you should visit your doctor.

In this post, your local air conditioning and heating repair expert, R.A. Biel Plumbing & Heating, shares tips on how you can minimize your exposure to spring allergens.

Monitor Mold and Pollen Counts – It’s important to keep track of mold and pollen counts. This information can be gleaned from weather reports in newspapers and on the internet, radio and television.

Keep Your Windows and Doors Shut – During allergy season, it’s best to keep your windows and doors closed at all times. This applies to your vehicle as well.

Maintain a Clean Home – Make sure your home is always clean, including your HVAC system. You can rely on R.A. Biel Plumbing & Heating for air duct cleaning and air conditioning repair services.

Identify Your Allergies –  Know which pollens cause your allergies. Tree and grass pollen counts are at their peak at night in the spring and summer. Meanwhile, ragweed pollen levels are at their highest in the mornings in the late summer and early fall.

Wash Up After Going Outside – If you’ve spent time outdoors, shower and change your clothes as soon as you get home. It’s recommended to take your allergy medication and wear a filter mask when working in the yard or outdoors.

Don’t Smoke –  Smoking can make your allergies worse, as it irritates the nasal passages and respiratory tract.

Maintain Humidity Levels  –  To prevent dust mites, keep your home’s humidity level between 30% and 50%.
