Important Tips for Reducing Air Pollution Inside Your Home

Mark J. Biel • February 26, 2021

We usually associate air pollution with things that occur outdoors, such as motor vehicle fumes and factory smoke. While busy thinking of ways to limit it, we often forget that the air we breathe inside our homes also requires attention. As it turns out, indoor air pollution is more than three times worse than air pollution in the outdoors.

Important Tips for Reducing Air Pollution Inside Your Home

As shocking as this seems, reducing indoor pollutants like dust, pet dander, mold, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and cigarette smoke isn’t as challenging as you may think. Here local heating and  air conditioning repair  contractor R.A. Biel Plumbing & Heating, Inc., shares the following tips that can help improve indoor air quality.

Open your windows.  Adequate ventilation is essential to a healthy indoor environment. By opening your windows for just a few minutes a day, you promote air circulation by pulling fresh outdoor air in and letting stale indoor air out. Make sure to do this when it’s not overly cold outside or when the pollen count is too high.

Use exhaust fans.  Turn your exhaust fans on whenever you cook food or take hot showers. These devices help remove fumes and steam that will suspend in your indoor air. Also, see to it that the dryer vents discharge to the outdoors to reduce lint. Cooling and  heating repair  experts also recommend running your AC unit on the fan setting to minimize pollen in the air when opening your windows isn’t possible.

Change the filter frequently.  The air filters of your HVAC system collect dust, pollen, dander and other indoor contaminants. They can get dirty, which can prevent your heating or cooling unit from performing its function effectively and efficiently. Be sure to clean or replace the filter every 90 days if you live without pets. Otherwise, do it after 60 days.

Clean your house.  Dust and dander can easily accumulate on the surface of furniture and other items in the living room and bedroom. This is especially true if you have pets around. Make it a habit to clean these areas regularly with a feather duster or a vacuum cleaner.
