What Are the Common Causes of Water Discoloration?

Mark J. Biel • May 13, 2020

Water discoloration is a common plumbing problem reported by homeowners. You can experience this problem if there are issues with your private water line or your district’s water mains. To determine what’s causing the water to change color, you must contact a plumbing expert.

Learn common causes of water discoloration from a local plumbing and  heating repair  expert.

Red Water

Minerals can build up in your home in galvanized iron or steel pipes. Once the protective layer on the pipes wears off, the steel or iron underneath gets exposed to the water and begins to rust. The residue on your pipes can turn the water to a yellowish-red or brownish hue. This water can affect the color and taste of food and stain your clothes and belongings. If your galvanized pipes are rusting, they’ll need to be replaced.

Green Water

Two things can cause your water to turn a greenish hue. A buildup of algae in your plumbing lines can cause green water to come out of your faucets. Green water can also come from copper pipes. You’ll see green stains and residue on the sinks and tub when copper gets into the water. A skilled plumber can determine if there’s algae or copper in your system and effectively remove it. Yellow Water

If your water appears yellow, your local water distribution center may be doing repairs on a water main, or a nearby fire hydrant may be in use or not working properly. Annual flushing at your local water distribution center heightens water pressure to remove loose rust and fragments that may have gotten trapped in the lines. If this is the case, the water will absorb the rust and become yellow. Make sure to contact your local water distributor if the problem persists.
